I always find myself drawn to the old-Dubai; places that reminds me of my childhood. My favourite mall(s) are definitely Beach Center, Jumeira Plaza and Jumeira Center. These malls have been around since I was a kid, and we often visited them to enjoy/buy specific things. Beach Center had the best arcade game place EVER. They had lots of Mr Krisps chips on the counter, which I am in love with & can eat over 5 packs in less than 5mins. It also has 2 great art shops that have expanded their stock items in the past 3-6 years. One of them sells a very limited selection of yarn now! & not to forget the legendary Burger King with its old play section, which is gone by now. & Baskin Robins! & the party materials/halloween shop in level 2!
Jumeira Plaza still has one of the best art shops in the area, Art Stop. Although its half what it used to be, the saleswoman is very lovely and they still sell a great amount of art materials. Dome Cafe stands strong in the middle of the center, and I always get my quick fix in the quite ladies saloon upstairs.
& Jumeira Center definitely holds the most memories of all. The first Magrudy; they used to sell a great variety of art and crafts supplies. I bought some of my very first cross stitched with imagery canvases from there- I might still have some of the threads left overs somewhere! Kazem stationary was our family’s #1 stickers supplier. I still have them all in a small box. They do not sell them anymore, whatever they have is whatever has left from 10+ years ago. The cashier is still the same man from over 10 years ago. (I was just there today and bought florescent acrylic tubes. I still need the pink one!) The Body Shop always reminds me of Mama. She used to buy these circular-shaped colourful bath oils. It always made me feel grown-up-ish to use them when having a bath. & the best of all is Gerard. We, my sisters and I, used to go to this cafe with my uncle back when he used to have his sexy red convertible. I would always order Zaatar Croissant, Pepsi, and sometimes a Strawberry Tart. He would then take us for a ride next to the beach and allow us to stand as he drives.
These 1-level compact quite centers float my juices on any given day. Their mere existence allows me to relive my childhood. In some ways, they feel more authentic than any of these big tourist-filled malls feel, or ever will. I am so thankful they still exist to this day.
